The Daily Driver

rat rod 519x389 The Daily Driver

Practical?

If your like me you have one car and it does everything, from shopping to camping, to racing and trips to the dump. It gets used, abused and a lot of the time broken. This is where it comes in handy to have the ‘daily driver’. Instead of thinking “no I wont do that to my car it will be a bit impractical“, you can have the luxury of doing what ever the hell you want and then still having an air conditioned, comfy car to get you to work and back in. The trouble is unless you can afford a daily driver that is as cool as a new Fiat 500 or something similar, you will have to put up with the bland mk5 Escort or Diesel Astra.

Obviously  every car has potential but well, I nodded off just putting that picture on, it’s that boring.

I have been thinking recently about using car rental for whenever my car breaks or I have to get 500 miles on no petrol (I would roughly make it about 250 on a full 60 litre tank…). Instead of buying a £1000 car to get me around every now and again and not really enjoy driving it, I could have a different car every time I needed it. Plus as everyone knows, no car is as fun to drive as a hire car…

Imagine needing a car for a couple of days while you were changing a gearbox, all you have to do is walk into your local car hire place and choose from an array of vehicles and if you hate the way it drives just choose something different next time. So get rid of that boring daily, maybe even give it to a charity (but just make sure it doesn’t get scrapped! It may be boring now but then again a mk2 Escort was scrap fodder once upon a time too….)

Stinkween Delorean

Marty McFly: Wait a minute, Doc. Ah… Are you telling me that you built a time machine… out of a DeLorean?

Dr. Emmett Brown: The way I see it, if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?

If its good enough to build a time machine out of in Back To The Future, its certainly cool enough to become the centrepiece for Nike’s new advertising campaign. To celebrate the release of the new Stinkween Braata 6.0′s, Madsteez and Stink, the two artists who collaborated to make Stinkween, were let loose on a Motel in So-Cal and decorated it in there own personal style before hosting a huge get together for the release party. The Motel was complete with an orange fur lawn, glow in the dark furniture and a candy mountain. The main attraction of course being the Modified DeLorean!

It looks like it could do with an LSD and some slammage….

It is very cool though and the rest of the motel can be seen in this video, I only wish I could have been there to party with them!

grunty pic 2 Retro Rides Gathering Cider, Bourbon and Good Times

So its officially the morning after the day after the night before and I am just starting to come down from an absolute pure win weekend. The Retro Rides Gathering was a massive success with a great weekend of camping, racing and fields full of all kinds of weird and wonderful machinery. My car decided it hates its valve seats so I didn’t manage to show off my POS but it did mean that I called shotgun in the stunning Zetec Escort above, never a bad way to travel to be honest. The other car in our tiny little group was a mk1 Golf that is a little 1300 screamer on bike carbs owned by a good friend Ash, who I have to say a special thanks to for helping try to get my car working for a couple of weeks before the show.

Once all the tents were set up on the saturday, we got the first BBQ underway and after getting through all my Rattler cider, me and rich started on the proper drinking! A few little trips around the campsite introduced us to some awesome people with even cooler cars, watching all the homebrew scooters and bikes going around was funny and something similar will have to be built for next years show for sure!

After the sun started to go down we took a wonder over to the brilliant South West groups gazebo where they were showing Mad Max and The Driver on a big screen, more drinking ensued ending with getting to sleep in the very early hours after chatting to Bruce (MysteryMachine) and some of the Dutch crew (sorry I forgot your names! the end of the night did get a bit blurry…)

Waking up the next day proved easy enough considering the night before, however I am only speaking for myself there as Rich in the next tent did not get up quite so easily and even managed to sleep through The Black Dahlia Murder being blasted directly into his tent! Once 9 am rolled around it was time to get over to the show field and get Ash signed up for a little go on the track. It was a small track run as a sprint format with a group of 9 or 10 cars having 3 goes each. There were some very quick cars out but it was also great fun watching some of the more innapropriate cars going hell for leather around the very tight track as well.

After watching the racing for a while, we went for our first wonder around the show field to see the amazing array of cars around. Retro Rides is unlike any other forum I browse because of the sheer amount of different cars that are on it, there were even a few cars I had to check several times because I didn’t have a clue what they were! I got a bit sidetracked by looking at the cars and talking and therefore forgot to take many pictures but I did take a few when I remembered that I did actually have a camera around my neck.

After more track action I went on a little hunt for BGTmidget7476 and his MGB and Capri, because he had been extremely kind and said I could have a spare 1.6 Pinto head for free! I forgot how heavy these anchors are though, I definitely should have driven over to pick it up! A special shout out as well to Bruce for allowing us to get onto the South West stand at the last minute, that was greatly appreciated!

and the award goes to Retro Rides Gathering Cider, Bourbon and Good Times

Things started to wrap up after the Awards were given out and people began to return to pack up the camp site and say goodbye to one of the best car shows of the year! Roll on RR Gathering 2010, hopefully I’ll make it in my own car this time… For now though it was time to jump back in the Escort and fall asleep without having to worry about driving icon biggrin Retro Rides Gathering Cider, Bourbon and Good Times

When is a car not a car? When its a tent posing as a car in a parking space obviously!

nascar tent When Is A Car Not A Car?

car tent When Is A Car Not A Car?

A collaboration between the PARK(ing) Day project and Michael Rakowitz has allowed people to camp in parking spaces in tents that look like cars under a weather sheet. Its a fantastic idea and some of the tents available look great (pretend 911 anyone?) but the thought of camping on the road in a parking space does not sound appealing to me, especially when you consider how many idiots crash into parked cars these days! From what I can gather it is a charity style program held once a year and anyone can use the PARK(ing) Day concept in there local town to bring a little bit of fun to the busy roads. Other great ideas for what you could do in a parking space other than park can be found here

Climate Change and global warming are big news for all car manufacturers at the moment, with engine efficiency, hybrids and electric engines all being top priority for any new car. But just how much will it change the industry? Will car enthusiasts, amateur motor sports and fans of classic cars and sports cars be looked at as ‘evil’ people because of the effect there hobby has on the environment? could people just be completely banned from owning anything other than a brand new Prius? This would never happen outright, but that doesn’t stop the government bringing in tighter and tighter regulations and rules, which will eventually leave only the very hardcore enthusiast (or richest..) with the ability to legally keep his  or her car on the road. The Ace keep an eye on everything happening about things like this, which is very helpful and it provides an organised front to present to the government and let them hear our voices. I really hope everyone who  has an interest in cars checks them out.

Lets not forget by driving and using old cars you would be recycling, the government wants you to recycle everything you possibly can….except cars by the looks of it! Do not get me started on the whole scrappage scheme fiasco! Everyone seems to think electric cars are a new invention as well, people really should read up on the first ever cars and how they moved. This is not to say I am against new technology though, anything that pushes the industry in new and exciting ways is always a good thing, I just hope the new breed of cars and the old can live in harmony. If I choose to use my quarter century old car for the foreseeable future I sincerely hope I’m allowed to without it being a constant struggle with rules and regulations.

If I did choose to get a second car and I didn’t want to buy a diesel people carrier, or whatever other mundane catastrophe the man at the showroom told me was best for the environment, what choices would I have?

First off would be the Hybrid, the most famous being the Toyota Prius, these cars have a normal petrol engine but they also have an electric engine, which cuts in instead of the petrol engine when going slow or braking etc. It is a very clever design but really just one thing annoys me about them, take a look at the types of hybrid cars around at the moment.

Toyota prius Climate Change

mk2 prius Climate Change

honda insight Climate Change

honda civic hybrid Climate Change

What do they all have in common? They’re all so damn ugly! The only reason anybody wants to drive something that looks like that is so they can have the satisfaction of thinking they are better than everyone else in there polluting petrol or diesel engine. It is getting a bit better though with normal cars being offered with hybrid engines alongside the normal petrol or diesel options.

The second choice available is the electric car. As well as the awful G wiz there are some quite interesting electric cars around and with battery technology getting better all the time, they really could be viable as a normal car soon. The Tesla Roadster is undoubtedly the coolest available. With 2oo lb ft of torque from 0 rpm and a redline of 14,000 rpm it shifts like a true sports car and does it all without contributing to climate change in quite the same way as a Lamborghini probably does! You just have to look at the thing to realise this is a cut above the normal ‘environmentally friendly’ cars

tesla roadster Climate Change

Of course you still have to charge electric cars and only a very small amount of electricity is made by sustainable sources, so they are still not exactly good for the environment. Therefore Hydrogen cars are probably the most realistic type of car to eventually take over from the normal combustion engine. They still use electric engines but they have there own mini hydrogen power plant on board and can produce a very clean running car.

Whatever happens in the future though, I will only start getting interested when they start making hover cars like we were promised in so many futuristic films.

Trucks are pretty badass.

Making a car so low its silly is badass.

Not content with showing everyone that they really can go round corners, with the  super fast Viper srt-10, the Americans have now created a full blown Supercar that is quite far removed from the normal muscle that the US normally produces. It has possibly the best name ever for a car, the Devon GTX. Anything with the same name as the farm loving West Country place I hail from is good in my books! icon razz Americans Try To Corner

I don’t think anybody can contest that the Devon GTX is an absolute stunner! It apparently has the intention to try and beat the current production car lap record around the Nordschleife achieved by the Radical SR8. That would be one hell of an achievement though, the SR8 really is silly fast.

Can the Devon really contest with this?

Even if it doesn’t manage to beat the Radical its still more stunning than Katy Perry in lingerie before it even begins to move.

2009 dodge viper srt10 Italian Muscle or American Beauty?

The Internet is buzzing at the moment with rumour going around about the possibility of Dodge Vipers getting a  V10 version of the Ferrari V8. An article that broke on Car and Driver has said that because Fiat, own the Viper brand and they are all connected with Ferrari, The big boss men have said its a possibility that some of the engine designs will be used to build the new Viper engine.

I am very undecided with this, Italian supercar technology does not fit in well with the American muscle car image. I like my American cars to be big brutal and raw, I dont want the two to mix. I’ve never really been a fan of Ferrari’s that much anyway, they are undoubtedly stunning cars but you just cannot drive one without looking like a complete tit. This is why I dont know what to think about it all because the only good thing about them is the sound, nothing sounds like a ferrari and its a sound that makes your neck hairs tingle! Watch this if you dont believe me…

I have always said imagine that sound in a car that you would actually let people see you driving. (Maybe im just bitter because I know i’ll never drive a real Ferrari unless they start using them in car hire companies icon razz Italian Muscle or American Beauty? )

The current Viper engine is a 8.4 litre v10 bruiser with 600 odd horsepower, and was a nurburgring production car lap record holder so its obviously no slouch at the moment, would ferrari know how make it even better or would it soften the whole car up with its more refined style?

Let me know what you think about the whole deal, is cross breeding a good idea? Also what would you call it? A Vipererrari, or a Ferraper?
