Carhenge!

You have probably heard about this before but I just came across a video that is about Carhenge and it reminded me of how damn cool it is.

Carhenge was built in 1987 by a guy called Jim Reinders and his family in memorial of his dad who lived on the farm where the huge sculptures reside. Jim Reinder’s is an artist and has made lots of weird sculptures but he wanted to do something epic as a memorial for his father and always loved Stonehenge when he used to live in the UK. So 5 years after his fathers death the 35 strong family met up to build this very cool piece.

It is now widely recognised as a massive tourist attraction for Alliance, Nebraska and has recently been voted the second ‘wackiest’ attraction in the USA. It is definitely something I think all car fans should consider going to see, I mean if people are willing to go and visit some big stones in a circle it must be way more fun to go and look at a load of cars in a circle right?  I know I’m going to be booking my flights from the UK to America sometime soon, now all I have to do is figure out what else there is to do in Nebraska… I guess I’ll have to learn to herd Cattle!

This brand new advert for the Audi R8 is both a success and a massive failure at the same time. A success for some amazing hot rods and stock cars getting on TV but a bit of a failure for Audi. The advert is based on the theme of Beauty and the Beast with the supposed beauty being the new topless Audi R8 and the beasts being all the hot rods.

Every comment I have heard about the advert so far has been along the lines of… “Wow look at the awesome hot rods” followed by “is this supposed to make me want an Audi? I want a hot rod now!” and that’s the polite ones. A lot more people have taken offence at the thought of the R8 being a beauty and the hot rods being some kind of ugly beasts, saying it is typical supercar snobbery and they clearly aren’t aiming the R8 at actual car fans but instead to rich women (well it is a convertible…) who just want a car to go with their latest million dollar handbag.

So within the car community at least this has backfired a bit for Audi… Or maybe not, obviously they are trying to tell everyone this car is a fashion accessory and not for the serious car driver…

Watch the advert and then comment on what you think, does it make you even remotely care about the R8 or did you just love the hot rods?

There is also a making of video on the Audi site which is worth a watch here

I’ll leave you with this comment from Pistonheads, which sums it up perfectly for me.

“Looks like a bunch of cars having a laugh at a party the Audi wasn’t invited to”

Subaru have really tried to tap into the culture of fear we have at the moment with this surprisingly thought provoking advert for their new car which is really, really safe apparently.

Pretty downbeat for an advert!

So there you have it, if you want to crash into a tree sometime soon buy a Scooby.

When you’re talking about an RX2 then yes. Yes I do!

The colour and those wheels are the biggest win I’ve seen for quite a while!

It was another fantastic race over the weekend for the F1, the rain came down and caused a fair amount of problems but it led to some proper old fashioned dog fighting throughout the race including an ace bit of drifting by Webber near the end because of his shot tyres.

Overall though it was a brilliant day for the British with a one two for McLaren and a win from Button for the second time in only 4 races showing that he is definitely one to watch again for the championship!

The fight between Hamilton and Vettel was a highlight of the race with them getting very close on several occasions and even touching wheels in the pit lane!

So what with the spins, overtaking galore, wheel touching and of course Buemi’s amazing crash in practice, even the biggest haters of ‘boring’ F1 must have enjoyed it at least a little bit! Watch the 90 second round up by the BBC if you don’t believe me!

Their is now a bit of a gap before the next GP in Spain, which is probably a good thing because they might have had a bit of a problem getting over this week because of all the ash! Hopefully though if things carry on the way they have been so far this season it will be brilliant.

For anyone that is possibly thinking of flying over to watch it, it might be an idea to try a different method of travel because there are reports that the ash cloud might be continuing the disruption for a while yet! Car hire and a cool road trip might be the order of the day for any F1 fans hoping to soak up the sun and watch some racing. I’m not sure how cool car hire companies are regarding taking their cars abroad so it might be an idea to get car hire in Spain and France sorted as well and hop into a different car in each country on your journey.

Whatever happens though I’m excited for the rest of the season now and I hope Button can carry on his good streak!

Over the May day bank holiday weekend the Practical Performance Car Magazine show will be held at Mallory Park circuit and like they did last year they have made a couple of adverts for the show and uploaded them on YouTube. For adverts done on a budgets of a few pence they are actually quite good fun and look like PPC had a bit of a laugh making them.

The two adverts they have and put in t’internet are spoofs of some pretty well known adverts in the UK… (I would probably say this might not be perfectly safe for work!)

I think PPC are almost hitting the mark with the whole trying to go viral for cheap advertising idea. Last year they got a lot of mentions within the whole car community with their ‘banned’ TV advert for the show. It was apparently banned on the basis that they were promoting something which harms the environment. Climate change news is everywhere these days so they probably knew the advert was going to be a bit controversial and controversy always leads to publicity…

The show does look like a great show with 1920′s drift cars, hot rods, silly fast lawnmowers and a live roof chop all happening on the Saturday, so whatever you think of their advertising techniques get down to Mallory on the 1st of May and you never know you might even see me there!
