This is a very nice Art Deco inspired VW Beetle (Yes I know it’s the second Beetle post this week, I love them alright?!)
I really like the whole new approach he has taken with it, the obvious lowering and tuck etc is there but the little touches like the wooden dash and hand carved gear stick really make this stick out from the crowd to me, he has taken an approach normally associated with houses and furniture and applied it to a car with fantastic results. If it was me I would get rid of the seats and put a nice wood carved bench style sofa in there, obviously only wooden stylings the fixings would have to be metal to make at least a little bit safe!
The natural patina is pretty much perfect and the shiny moon style hub caps and home made quarter bumpers set it off perfectly. The slight steam punk style of the exhausts are fantastic as well, although who knows how long a brass pipe will last? I imagine it would dis-colour very quickly but I’m not really an expert on copper, does anyone know if it will stay looking like that forever? The colouring also highlights to brown-ish patina coming through the black paintwork as well.
It just seems like a very well thought out and executed little Bug in my opinion, with no pandering to current ‘scenes’ or styles. Fresh thinking goes a long way and I imagine the next couple of years will see a few imitations and homages coming out of the woodwork.
I can just imagine an Art Deco designer having this parked outside his glamorous Brooklyn house circa 1940, showing off his style in a street otherwise lined with huge American land boats.
