General Motoring

It is all very well having an amazing car or bike and if you are lucky you might even have a garage that you can fit the car in to keep it out of the way when it is not being used, occasionally you come across something that makes you insanely jealous. This is one of those times and it isn’t even a vehicle I am jealous of, it is the place the person keeps and works on his vehicles that makes me hate my own tiny little garage and sloping driveway.

First off I should point out that this is not a normal garage build by someone’s house, this is a garage build in something called an AutoMotorPlex. The AutoMotorPlex in question is in Minneapolis and is much more than your typical garage on an industrial estate. The complex is a purpose build motorists dream with every unit being used for cars and bikes and there are lots of meets and shows held there including a Cars & Coffee event once a month that draws in around 500 cars and just as many again just to visit. The complex features 11 buildings with around 175 garage units and a 4000 square foot clubhouse that has a bar with a big screen TV and kitchen for gatherings and events. It also has sports courts, common are court yards and a 1.5 acre pond.  It is all in a 40 acre plot just outside of the main city and is an easy car journey to get to and from. The picture below is of the AutoMotorPlex during one of its Cars & Coffee meets in the summer, it looks bigger and better than most big UK shows!

Each individual unit is finished and fitted out by the owner and you can choose units in different widths and sizes starting from 13′ x 25′ to a huge 32′ x 86′ and some units even include drive through doors front and rear. The units are better specced than most houses with in floor heating, fire suppression sprinkler systems, bathrooms, office/private spaces (which they call ‘man caves’),  sound systems, satellite TV and WiFi.

Obviously with the mega amounts of money that will be in the complex as whole and in your own individual unit, you also get Internet Protocol based security for the campus and your individual unit, a security gate to get into the complex and optional added security that includes internet accessible security cameras so you can look at your unit wherever you are as long as you have web access.

The particular build I am talking about is from a guy on the 6 Speed Online forums who has a 40′ x 40′ unit he is building with a 16′ x 40′ mezzanine that will be a second floor inside. You can see his plans for the build in the layout below. The upstairs ‘man cave’ includes a kitchen, bathroom, living room area with a TV, office and a deck outside. The downstairs workshop area has two 4 post lifts, storage room, wash bays/drains, another TV and a fully stocked cabinet and tool area.

If you want to follow the full build in proper detail you can by reading the big thread here. I will just show you what happened by way of a picture time line. It is amazing work and it is a shame it is classed as a commercial unit and can’t live there because that place is about 50x nicer than my actual house. Probably warmer as well!

Now you may have noticed the rather nice looking Camaro sat there in one of the pictures. Surely that can’t be the only reason he wanted a garage like this? Of course not, he also has this project!

Can you tell what it is yet? How about now…

It should be pretty awesome and the guy is still doing bits to the garage so expect it to just get better and better.

The whole dedicated complex thing had me thinking though, it is probably one of the best ideas I have seen in a very long time and to have a whole thing just dedicated to people into bikes and cars would bring around a sense of community not seen in normal industrial estates and the like. I’m seriously wondering if it is an idea I could take onto something like Dragons Den to get some investors. If I had the money I would definitely think about doing something like this, especially somewhere just outside of a big city like London where there would be lots of rich people with expensive cars but nowhere really in the city to park them and work on them. It seems like it could be a pretty sound financial investment, start off by buying a block of industrial units, which you could maybe rent to 10 people to start with and I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to fill up the spaces quickly and at a decent price to make money on it. Please someone if you are rich, help me make this happen!

Thanks to the Build Threads post for showing me this epic garage and also most of the pictures are from the thread and Alex Bellus Photography.

My housemate is a bit of a genius when he is playing with his wood and that combined with both our love for cars and numerous spare parts hanging around, things have been slowly making their way into our living room as pieces of furniture. Car parts as furniture is nothing new as such but most of the time they are quite mechanical pieces with metal frames and stands but being as my housemate is a joiner he is looking at making more of it featuring really nice and beautifully made wooden bases.

Now being as the people reading this would be the ideal market if he were to start selling some of his creations I have a few questions to put forward:

How much would you pay for pieces of furniture ranging from large coffee tables (size of a tailgate) to small wheel tables and even clocks. I will show a couple of examples of the size and style…

(Sorry for the picture quality they were taken off my phone)

This is a small side table or bedside table and is using a Ford 13″ 4 spoke wheel. This was the first piece he did and he used a very stable but space saving one leg stand for it.

rs 4 spoke small table 2 500x666 Car Based Furniture

This piece is a quite long coffee table that uses a VW Caddy tailgate as the base. The one we used is bashed up and dented and rat look but obviously depending on what the customer supplied us with or what budget they allowed for us to source a part is up to them. For example if you supply a tailgate the cost will be significantly less than if we had to source one ourselves and depending on the condition a mint tailgate could cost mega bucks…

Again sorry for the quality of the pictures, I will try to get some properly, these are just what I had on my phone. This is just a dip into the market to see if people would like this kind of furniture in their house and if they would be willing to pay the prices it would cost to make.

Hopefully you will see us at some shows this year with more examples of his brilliant work. So drop me a line or comment below and tell me what you would like to see in the way of car furniture, it would all be completely custom as well so get in touch and we will see what we can do for you!

This part of the Mooneyes Xmas Party blog posts isn’t necessarily about the cars but it is about the people and the atmosphere of the event. Everyone seems to go full on in the rodding scene with everyone dressing in full 50′s style and living the whole lifestyle and it makes for an awesome look and atmosphere at shows. As I was looking through all the show photos the one thing that kept standing out for me was how much fun the event looked so I thought I would show off the non car part of the event a bit more!

You can find the cars at the event in Part 1 and Part 2.

Tom Edge is a local boy to me and is probably one of the best photographers I know of in the area and he just went and got himself a tumblr! You can see his work at Tom Edge Photographic and it is definitely somewhere you should bookmark, RSS or follow if you do the Tumblr thing as well!

At the moment he has a video shoot project on the go, which should be interesting to see the outcome of because if he can create moving images half as good as his normal pictures, it should be sweet. These are some of the pictures he took in between filming breaks on his first day of shooting with a SWDubs members MX5, which is a bad ass little car!

Infographics seem to be everywhere at the moment with any kind of facts being put into a colourful picture in a way that makes it easy to look through, rather than in just a list. You can see them on pretty much anything from cell phone usage to the decline of Yahoo! I just came across this infographic on the Confused car insurance site and thought it would be worth sharing with you all.

I’m a bit shocked at some of the statistics, apparently my area in the south west has the lowest average premium! I wish that were true for me… I also didn’t realise that they boost premiums if you associate with the rich and famous, I find that quite odd. The usual bits about girls being cheaper to insure than boys is there and still completely wrong imo!

Definitely worth thinking about a few of those factors the next time your insurance is due. I know that I’m going to become an old woman, living in the south west, who is a policeman that works at night and drives an old 5 door estate car on a 1 mile round trip. (Time for everyone to buy retro Volvo estates then…)

Nations Trucks free AK47 with every used van 500x379 Guns N Vans

Americans love their guns don’t they. They love having them, they love using them and they love getting them for free. They also like big cars, vans, SUV’s and bigger vans so what better way to entice an Orlandon (? Floridian? meh…) to buy a new or used van from your dealership than to offer to get a free AK-47 with every purchase!

Remember that part in Bowling For Columbine when Michael Moore goes into a bank and opens up a new account and gets a free gun? Well a used vans dealership called Nations Trucks in Sanford, Orlando has decided it was a great idea and they are now offering a $400 voucher to a local gun store to anyone who wants to purchase one of their used trucks.

Who knows if the owner is a massive red neck who just loves guns or if he is just a savvy marketer and is using it as a publicity stunt. The story has gone pretty viral all over the internet and I started writing this yesterday only to go home and watch Russell Howard’s Good News where he even mentioned it! It seems to be working as well because the dealership said they have booked in 47 appointments to view trucks in one day compared to their normal three!

All publicity is good publicity hey!

So would you be more tempted to go their or would you prefer to buy your used vans from a more reputable source?

Now I’m not much of a gamer and when I do have a go on one at a mates house it is always just for racing games. This steering wheel controller erm unit(?) might just turn me into a bit more of a player though, it is the most complete looking race simulator I have ever seen and I really want a go on one. It would be like having your own personal arcade machine!

Vision Vr3 500x425 Mega Want Gaming Chair

If anyone is feeling flush and they want to buy me one for Xmas they can splash a cool $1295 on it right here (BTW I also need a PS3, steering wheel and the games as well…)

I’m not much of a gamer but if I do occasionally play on a mates system then it is always on some kind of racing game. However Need For Speed just dropped the new Shift 2 trailer and I have to say it is epic! Screw making a game they should make some kind of feature length movie about it!
