Ken Block In A MK2 Escort

Colin McRae (RIP) is THE rally driver and sadly we will no longer get to see him race or drive ever again.  He built up a huge industry around himself and people all over loved him, none more so than the scene’s new golden boy Ken Block. He was on Colin’s team when he competed in the X Games and now he has taken over the role of driving consultant on the new Colin McRae Dirt 2 video game. It would seem he also shares the same love of old skool Fords as well because he has a new video out showing him ripping around in a fully prepped MK2 Escort, which Colin also loved to drive and often took part in different events in his own Escort.

Ken Block forgo’s the regular flashy editing and stunts in this video and just has some fun driving an awesome car in some woods. I think the smiles say it all.

So say hello to the new Colin McRae, Ken Block

  1. Ken Block is good, but I’m not sure he’s as good as McRae was.
It would be interesting to see him in a WRC rally, see how good he really is.

  2. Apparently the first time he competed in a MK2 Escort he spectacularly crashed it, but as McRae used to be like you either go big and crash out a few times or you may as well just give up. I think he will get better though, he has only been racing competitively for about 4 years.

  3. Your right Loxlee, i hope he does get better, but at the moment there are many many rally drivers that are as good as him and many more that are better, its just he makes arty films of drifting.

  4. Its all about cross over appeal though, there are loads of awesome drivers but they are just that, drivers. He has the whole package just like how lewis hamilton was a sponsors dream because he had the whole golden boy saviour of UK motorsport image. whereas some of the best drivers in the world are relatively unknown except in there own field because they aren’t necessarily the most attractive/fun/controversial etc person.

  5. Either way more needs to be done by people like Ken Block who inject fun and excitement back into motorsport because it has become very boring recently. Night races like the new Abu Dhabi grand prix go someway to add interest and generate publicity but Ken Blocks videos have publicised cars and racing more than almost anything else in the industry recently has.

  6. Adding gimmicks to motorsport does not make it better for the actual fans though. I can see where you are coming from but i couldn’t give a monkeys if Lewis Hamilton is a sponsors dream because young people can relate to someone their own age in F1 now. Its the racing that counts, but the bull crap that happens on the track. Same goes with rallying, most rally drivers can do everything Ken Block does in his videos coz they get as many goes at it as they want to get the right shot. Its when you get in the forest that your skill really counts, or you’ll end up wrapped around a tree. The problem is you’ll now find a load of kids thinking Ken Block is the best rally driver ever because of what they have seen on youtube, when hes really only just learning.

  7. Ah you see thats where I’d like to think that people like Ken Block and Lewis Hamilton open a gateway to people into the world of cars. 1000 people watch Ken Block sliding around some docks 300 of them then think that is amazing and find out some more about rallying. Even if only ten of them then become actual fans of the sport thats definitely a bonus.
I wonder how much the F1 viewing figures went up last year just because of people hearing about this ‘kid’ called Lewis Hamilton. All those people sat on there sofas at home tuning in mean more fans and the sport gets bigger and gets more money. Not that F1 needs money but if a tiny part of that goes into more grassroots motorsports or the devlopment of new drivers, it can never be a bad thing.
