RAISING SPEED LIMITS IS SAFE

According to a trial in Utah where speed limits were raised to 80 mph the new higher limit brings drivers within the law and has no negative saftey impact at all!

Beginning in 2008, The Utah Department Of Transportation has been allowed to raise speed limits and they say that because drivers were already driving at the faster speeds anyway, they have managed to bring drivers within the law without having any effect on safety.

They said

“One of the concerns when we presented this bill a couple of sessions ago was that people would increase speeds to 90 or 95 and there would be tremendous carnage on the road,”

“Even though it has only been a year, that has not happened. And all that’s happened is that people haven’t changed their speed much — a little bit — but they’re doing so legally. So by increasing the speed limit to 80, we just made them legal.”

Seems like that is one good point for modernising speed limits for an ever more modern array of cars on the road. The speed limits we have now came in when normal cars could barely reach 50mph and took from Liverpool to London to stop, things have significantly changed now but we are still lumbered with pre historic speed limit laws!
